About Magnum, P.I.

Magnum, P.I. follows Thomas Sullivan Magnum IV, a charming former Navy SEAL turned private investigator living on Oahu, Hawaii. In exchange for handling occasional security matters, Magnum enjoys the run of Robin's Nest, the lavish oceanfront estate of an unseen, wealthy novelist named Robin Masters, where he drives a borrowed red Ferrari 308 GTS and lives the enviable island lifestyle.

Each week Magnum takes on cases ranging from missing persons and stolen property to murder and old wartime debts, often clashing with Jonathan Quayle Higgins III, the estate's punctilious British majordomo who guards the property and its prized Doberman pinschers, Zeus and Apollo. Magnum is aided by his Vietnam War buddies: helicopter pilot Theodore 'TC' Calvin and nightclub owner Orville 'Rick' Wright, whose connections and resources frequently help crack a case.

Beneath the sun, surf, and easygoing humor, the series often returned to weightier themes of friendship, loyalty, and the lingering scars of the Vietnam War shared by Magnum and his comrades. Selleck's relaxed charisma, the lush Hawaiian scenery, and the sparring chemistry between Magnum and Higgins made the show one of the defining detective dramas of the 1980s.
