About Oshi no Ko
Oshi no Ko is a 2023 anime produced by studio Doga Kobo, adapted from the hit manga written by Aka Akasaka and illustrated by Mengo Yokoyari. It opens with a feature-length premiere that sets up an unusual premise: a small-town doctor who is a devoted fan of rising idol Ai Hoshino finds his life upended when she unexpectedly becomes his patient. What follows reframes a glittering pop fairy tale as a sharp, often unsettling look at the machinery of modern Japanese entertainment, where carefully managed images hide private truths.
The series quickly settles into the lives of Ai's twin children, Aqua and Ruby Hoshino, as they grow up inside and around the industry that shaped their mother. Aqua is watchful and calculating, quietly pursuing answers about the adults who orbited Ai's career, while the bright-eyed Ruby chases her own dream of becoming an idol. Around them the story builds a wide cast of performers, managers, and creators, using each new arc to peel back another layer of how fame is manufactured and sold.
Across its first season Oshi no Ko moves through distinct worlds of show business, from reality dating shows to stage acting and pop music, anchoring its mystery in grounded portraits of young people trying to stay whole under the spotlight. The Japanese voice cast, led by Takeo Otsuka as Aqua and Yurie Igoma as Ruby, gives the show its emotional weight, balancing satire with genuine tenderness and making it one of the most talked-about anime of its year.
