About Rubi
Rubi is a 2004 Mexican telenovela produced by Jose Alberto Castro for Televisa, adapted from the classic comic and story by Yolanda Vargas Dulche that had already inspired earlier film and television versions. It follows Rubi Perez, a strikingly beautiful young woman from a poor neighborhood in Mexico City who is consumed by a single conviction: that her looks are a currency she can trade for the wealthy life she believes she deserves. Ashamed of her humble origins and resentful of the sacrifices her mother and sister make for her, Rubi resolves to escape poverty by any means available to her.
When her best friend Maribel, who walks with a disability and comes from a rich family, introduces her to that comfortable world, Rubi sees her opportunity. She is genuinely drawn to Alejandro Cardenas, a young architect with modest means, but she calculates that marrying the wealthy doctor Hector Ferrer would secure her future. Torn between love and ambition, Rubi sets in motion a web of manipulation and betrayal that ensnares everyone around her, including the friend who trusted her most.
Across its single season the series traces the slow, costly unraveling of Rubi's schemes, examining vanity, class resentment, loyalty, and the price of choosing money over love. Anchored by a breakout performance from Barbara Mori in the title role, the remake became a ratings phenomenon and one of the most widely exported Mexican telenovelas of its era, cementing Rubi as an enduring archetype of the beautiful, ruthless social climber.
