About The Hostel (Ugandan TV series)
The Hostel is a Ugandan drama series that premiered on NTV Uganda in 2011 and ran for four seasons through 2015. Created by Sabiiti Moses and Emanuel Egwel in partnership with Fast Track Productions, the show is set in a university student hostel in Kampala and follows a group of young residents as they navigate classes, romance, money troubles, friendship and the everyday drama of campus life. It was widely credited with helping to pioneer locally produced scripted television in Uganda at a time when the airwaves were dominated by imported soap operas.
The ensemble cast included Hellen Lukoma as Patra, Taryn Kyaze as Tessa and Richard Tuwangye as Twine, alongside performers such as Kuddzu Isaac and Daniel Omara. The series mixed lighthearted comedy with more serious storylines about relationships, ambition and growing up, and its relatable depiction of Ugandan hostel life made many of its young actors household names. Several cast members, including Lukoma and Tuwangye, went on to prominent careers in Ugandan film, music and comedy after the show.
The Hostel evolved across its run, with NTV Uganda commissioning later seasons directly after the early episodes proved popular. The fourth season, subtitled Serenity, introduced a fresh cast in a new hostel setting and premiered on 23 February 2015. The franchise remains a touchstone of early Ugandan scripted drama and is frequently cited as an influence on subsequent local productions that sought to portray contemporary urban Ugandan youth on screen.
