About The Spectacular
The Spectacular (De Spectaculaire) is a Dutch crime drama created by Willem Bosch and Pieter Kuijpers, based on real events from the late 1980s. Set in the Dutch-Belgian-German border region of Limburg, it follows a wave of attacks aimed at British soldiers stationed there, and the local police suddenly thrust into the middle of a conflict that reaches far beyond their jurisdiction. The series keeps its focus on the people on every side and on the era that shaped them.
At the center is detective Jeanine Maes, who leads an investigation hampered by a lack of international police cooperation and by the gap between her small-town force and the forces at work around it. As the case widens, the story weighs idealism against the human cost of violence, following investigators, families, and the community caught in between. The series treats the attacks in restrained, non-graphic terms, drawing its tension from procedure, doubt, and consequence rather than spectacle.
Across four episodes, The Spectacular pairs a tightly drawn period setting with a study of duty under pressure. Led by Hadewych Minis as Jeanine Maes, with Jacob Derwig and Michel Sluysmans, it earned recognition in the Netherlands, including a Golden Calf for Michel Sluysmans. The result is a sober look at a charged chapter of recent European history, told through the people who lived it.
