About Wataha (The Border)
Wataha, released internationally as The Border, is a Polish crime thriller produced for HBO Poland and distributed across Europe through HBO Europe. Set in the rugged Bieszczady mountains along the Polish-Ukrainian frontier, the series follows the officers of the Border Guard as they patrol a remote and unforgiving stretch of the European Union's eastern edge. The landscape itself becomes a central character, with dense forests, isolated outposts, and smuggling trails shaping the rhythm of the work and the lives of those who do it.
The story centers on Captain Wiktor Rebrow, an experienced and idealistic officer whose unit is devastated by a deadly explosion in the opening episodes. Driven to uncover what happened and who was responsible, Rebrow pursues a tangled investigation that exposes corruption, cross-border smuggling networks, and personal betrayals reaching into his own ranks. As he digs deeper, the line between duty and obsession begins to blur, and the cost of the truth grows heavier with each season.
Across three seasons the show broadens its scope from a single act of sabotage to wider themes of migration, organized crime, and the strain placed on people guarding a contested border. Praised for its atmospheric cinematography, tense pacing, and grounded performances, Wataha became one of HBO Europe's flagship original dramas and helped raise the international profile of Polish television.
