Redd Foxx, born John Elroy Sanford on December 9, 1922, in St. Louis, Missouri, was an American comedian and actor. Before television stardom, he built a long career as a pioneering stand-up comic, known for his groundbreaking and often risque 'party records' that made him a major draw on the nightclub circuit. He took the role of his life as Fred Sanford, naming the character partly in tribute to his own family name.
