Character Arc
Fred G. Sanford is the cantankerous, fast-talking patriarch at the heart of the series. A widower in his early sixties, he runs the Sanford and Son salvage business out of his home in Watts, where he lives with his son Lamont. Fred is opinionated, stubborn, and frequently scheming, always chasing a shortcut to easy money while resisting hard work whenever possible. Despite his gruff manner and constant insults, he is deeply attached to Lamont and fears being left alone.
Fred's signature comic device is the fake heart attack. Whenever an argument is not going his way or he wants to guilt Lamont into doing what he wants, he clutches his chest, staggers, and cries out to his late wife, 'Elizabeth, I'm coming to join you, honey! It's the big one!' The recurring bit became one of the most quoted gags in 1970s television. He also delights in trading barbs with relatives and neighbors, most memorably his sharp-tongued sister-in-law Aunt Esther, whom he loves to call 'ugly.'
Across the series, Fred's bluster repeatedly gives way to genuine tenderness toward his son, and many episodes resolve with a moment of warmth that reveals the bond beneath the bickering. Redd Foxx's portrayal made Fred one of television's most beloved comic characters and turned the role into the defining performance of his career.
