Character Arc
Bae Seok-ryu is introduced as a model of success: a driven, accomplished woman who left her hometown to build an impressive career abroad and seemed to have her future neatly settled, engagement included. Beneath the polished surface, however, she is exhausted and quietly unhappy, and she makes the abrupt decision to walk away from both her job and her relationship. Her return to her childhood neighborhood in Seoul, without a clear plan, sets the story in motion and unsettles the family and community that had taken her achievements as a point of pride.
Much of Seok-ryu's arc is about giving herself permission to start over. She fends off her mother's worry and disappointment, weathers the neighborhood's curiosity, and slowly figures out what she actually wants rather than what looks impressive from the outside. Spirited, blunt, and quick with a comeback, she is most herself in the company of people who knew her before her career, especially her best friend and her reawakened bond with the boy from next door.
Her relationship with Choi Seung-hyo anchors her journey. What begins as bickering and old grievances becomes a tender, lived-in romance as the two recognize how much history and trust they share. Through that friendship-turned-love and the steady support of her family, Seok-ryu moves from burnout and self-doubt toward a more honest, self-defined idea of happiness.
