Character Arc
Dr. Robert Hartley is a Chicago-based clinical psychologist and the calm center of the series. Reserved, courteous, and unfailingly understated, Bob reacts to the chaos around him with quiet exasperation rather than outbursts, a comedic approach built around Bob Newhart's signature deadpan delivery. He runs a private practice in a downtown medical building and leads a recurring therapy group whose members range from the timid to the overbearing.
Bob's professional life is a steady source of gentle comedy. His patients rarely make dramatic breakthroughs, and Bob himself often seems as bemused by their problems as they are. His friendship with fellow tenant Jerry Robinson, an orthodontist, and his interactions with receptionist Carol Kester round out an office world where small frustrations and offbeat personalities drive most of the stories.
At home, Bob's marriage to Emily is the emotional anchor of the show. The two share an affectionate, equal partnership marked by playful teasing and genuine respect, and their high-rise apartment is a frequent gathering point for their neighbor Howard. Over six seasons, Bob remains essentially himself: a decent, low-key everyman whose ordinary reactions to extraordinary people made him one of television's most beloved comic leads.
