Character Arc
Emily Hartley is Bob's wife and the warm, quick-witted counterpart to his reserved nature. A schoolteacher who later becomes a vice principal, Emily is intelligent, confident, and unafraid to tease Bob or hold her own in their good-natured banter. Suzanne Pleshette's distinctive voice and sharp comic timing made Emily one of the most admired sitcom wives of the era.
Rather than a passive homemaker, Emily is portrayed as an equal partner with her own career and opinions. The Hartleys' choice to remain a childless couple was notable for its time, and the show used their marriage to explore everyday adult relationships with affection and humor rather than melodrama. Emily's patience with Howard, the Hartleys' frequent uninvited neighbor, is a recurring source of comedy.
Across the series, Emily anchors the domestic half of the show much as the office anchors the workplace half. Her chemistry with Bob gives the series its heart, and the pairing became so iconic that it was revisited years later in the celebrated final scene of the series Newhart, where Bob Newhart's character wakes beside Pleshette as Emily, framing the whole of Newhart as Bob Hartley's dream.
