Character Arc
Bobby Ewing is the youngest son of Jock and Miss Ellie and the moral counterweight to his scheming older brother J.R. Honest, principled, and generally well-intentioned, Bobby often finds himself drawn into the family's business battles and forced to match J.R.'s maneuvering to protect Ewing Oil and the people he loves. His marriage to Pamela Barnes, daughter of the Ewings' bitter rival Digger Barnes, places him at the heart of the show's central family feud.
Bobby's relationship with Pam and his rivalry with J.R. anchor many of the series' emotional storylines, including custody battles, business power struggles, and repeated attempts to keep the family together. The character was written out at the end of one season, only to return in one of television's most famous twists when his death and the entire following season were revealed to have been a dream, allowing Patrick Duffy to rejoin the cast.
After his return, Bobby remains a central figure through the rest of the series, continuing to clash with and occasionally ally with J.R. as control of Ewing Oil shifts back and forth. He is consistently positioned as the family's conscience, the brother who tempers the Ewings' ruthlessness with a sense of fairness and loyalty.
