Character Arc
John Ross "J.R." Ewing Jr. is the eldest son of Jock and Miss Ellie Ewing and the cunning, ruthless executive who runs much of Ewing Oil. Charming and manipulative in equal measure, J.R. schemes against business rivals, family members, and anyone who threatens his control of the company, becoming the show's central antagonist and its most popular character. His battles for control of Ewing Oil, particularly against his brother Bobby and the rival Barnes family, drive many of the series' major storylines.
J.R.'s turbulent marriage to former beauty queen Sue Ellen is a recurring emotional core of the series, marked by infidelity, manipulation, and her struggles with alcoholism. His many affairs, double-crosses, and corporate gambits repeatedly put him at odds with nearly everyone around him, which set up the landmark cliffhanger in which an unseen assailant shoots him, launching the "Who Shot J.R.?" phenomenon.
Over 14 seasons, J.R. survives countless reversals of fortune, business collapses, and personal betrayals, always scheming his way back toward power. Larry Hagman's performance made the character an enduring symbol of the greedy, larger-than-life villain you love to hate, and J.R. remained the gravitational center of Dallas from its first episode to its last.
