Character Arc
Cho Sang-gu is Geu-roo's estranged uncle and, after a long absence, his unexpected guardian. A former cage fighter recently released from prison, he is hardened, blunt, and burdened by debt when he first arrives, and he initially sees Geu-roo and the inheritance as little more than a means to his own ends. His early scenes are marked by impatience and self-interest, and he treats both the boy and the trauma-cleaning business with detachment.
The work itself becomes the agent of his change. Entering the homes of the dead and confronting the unfinished stories they leave behind forces Sang-gu to slow down and to see other people, and Geu-roo's steadiness and honesty gradually wear away his defenses. As the season progresses he becomes genuinely protective of his nephew, learns the rhythms of the job, and begins to face the regrets and family history he has long avoided. His gruff exterior gives way to a reluctant, then deeply felt, sense of responsibility.
By the end of the series Sang-gu has transformed from a guarded outsider into a true guardian and family member, choosing to stay and to build a life around Geu-roo rather than walking away. His arc is the emotional engine of the show, a redemption shaped not by a single dramatic turn but by the accumulated weight of caring for someone else and honoring the dead. The relationship between uncle and nephew, wary at first and tender by the close, is the relationship the entire drama is built around.
