Character Arc
Cid Kagenou is the protagonist, a reincarnated young man whose lifelong obsession is to become the hidden power behind the scenes, the eminence in shadow who controls events without anyone knowing his name. In his fantasy life he maintains the bland identity of an unremarkable noble student named Cid Kagenou while secretly operating as Shadow, a masked figure of supposedly limitless power. Most of his comedy comes from the chasm between his grand delusions and the way reality keeps bending to make those delusions come true.
As Shadow he founds Shadow Garden, an organization he initially treats as elaborate make-believe, complete with a fictional enemy he names the Cult of Diabolos. He recruits and trains followers, gives them dramatic codenames, and improvises ominous monologues he thinks are pure theatre. Unknown to him, the cult is real, his recruits are deadly serious, and his throwaway plans repeatedly dismantle genuine threats, cementing his legend even as he remains oblivious to his own success.
Across both seasons Cid balances his ordinary daytime persona with increasingly large-scale nocturnal operations, defeating cult leaders, manipulating kingdoms, and amassing wealth and influence, all while insisting to himself that he is simply a background character indulging a hobby. His refusal to ever break character, even in genuinely dangerous situations, is the engine of the show, making him both an overpowered action hero and an affectionate parody of the brooding isekai protagonist.
