About The Eminence in Shadow
The Eminence in Shadow follows Cid Kagenou, a boy obsessed with the fantasy of being a hidden mastermind who secretly pulls the strings of the world from the shadows. After dying in a traffic accident on Earth, he is reincarnated into a sword-and-sorcery world where magic is real, and he seizes the chance to live out his chuunibyou daydream for real. Adopting the alias Shadow, he trains his body and mind in secret and recruits a band of devoted followers, intending to play-act as the leader of an underground organization battling a fictional evil cult he invents on the spot.
The comedy and the drama hinge on a single running joke: the conspiracy Cid makes up to sound cool, the Cult of Diabolos, turns out to be entirely real. The organization he founds, Shadow Garden, recruits women he rescues and gradually becomes a genuine intelligence and combat network that fights the cult across kingdoms. Cid believes he is merely improvising dramatic nonsense, while his fanatically loyal subordinates treat his every offhand remark as profound strategy, repeatedly stumbling into world-shaking victories that he never realises were real.
Adapted by Studio Nexus from Daisuke Aizawa's light novels, the series blends slick action set pieces with deadpan parody of the isekai and edgelord-hero genres. Cid keeps an ordinary student persona as the unremarkable Cid Kagenou by day while operating as the overpowered Shadow by night, and the gap between his delusional self-image and his accidental heroics drives both the humour and the surprisingly high-stakes plot.
