Character Arc
Clary Fray begins the series as a creative and seemingly normal young woman living in New York City and dreaming of a career in art. Everything changes on her eighteenth birthday when she witnesses a killing that no one else can see and her mother is suddenly taken. She soon learns that she is a Shadowhunter, a member of a secret race of half-angel warriors sworn to protect humanity from demons. Overwhelmed but determined, she throws herself into a dangerous new world in a desperate effort to find her mother.
As Clary trains and fights alongside the Shadowhunters of the New York Institute, she discovers that her own family history is tangled with some of the Shadow World's darkest secrets. She develops a deep and complicated bond with Jace, while leaning on her loyal best friend Simon and her new allies for support. Her unique abilities, including a talent for creating powerful runes, mark her as someone of rare importance. Throughout her journey she repeatedly puts herself at risk to protect the people she loves.
Over the course of the series Clary grows from an uncertain newcomer into a confident and capable warrior who is willing to make difficult sacrifices. She confronts painful truths about her parents, her bloodline, and the destiny that seems to follow her. Her courage and compassion make her a central force in the battles that define the show's later seasons. By the finale, Clary's arc is defined by love, resilience, and the price of protecting both the human and Shadow Worlds.
