About Shadowhunters
Shadowhunters, also known as Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments, is an urban fantasy drama that aired on Freeform and was based on Cassandra Clare's bestselling book series The Mortal Instruments. The story follows Clary Fray, a seemingly ordinary art student living in New York City who discovers on her eighteenth birthday that she is not human at all. After her mother is abducted by demonic forces, Clary learns that she belongs to a secret race of half-angel warriors known as Shadowhunters, who protect the human world from demons. Thrust into a hidden supernatural society, she must quickly learn the truth about her family and her own extraordinary heritage.
As Clary is drawn deeper into the Shadow World, she joins a band of young hunters at the New York Institute, including the brooding and skilled Jace, the disciplined leader Alec, and the fierce Isabelle Lightwood. Alongside her best friend Simon and the powerful warlock Magnus Bane, Clary races to rescue her mother and recover a dangerous artifact called the Mortal Cup. The group navigates a perilous world of demons, vampires, werewolves, warlocks, and seelies, all while uncovering long buried secrets tied to Clary's mysterious past. Romance, loyalty, and betrayal complicate every mission as alliances shift and old enemies resurface.
Over its three seasons the series blends action, romance, and supernatural mystery while exploring themes of identity, found family, and acceptance. It built a passionate and devoted fanbase, often called the Shadowfam, who praised the show for its diverse cast and its prominent same-sex relationship between Alec and Magnus. Although Freeform cancelled the series in 2018, the outpouring of fan support helped secure an extended final run so the story could reach a fuller conclusion. The show remains a beloved entry in the young adult fantasy genre and a frequent recommendation for fans of supernatural drama.
