Character Arc

Denji starts as one of anime's most sympathetic underdogs, a barely-literate kid whose ambitions stretch no further than food, sleep, and basic human warmth. His bond with Pochita is the purest thing in his miserable world, and it is precisely because he has so little that his loyalty hits so hard.

After Pochita revives him as a chainsaw hybrid, Denji trades poverty for a strange new family at Public Safety, learning to fight devils while clumsily figuring out what he even wants now that survival is handled. His crush on Makima and his prickly partnership with Power push him to grow up faster than he ever expected.

Across the season he edges from pure id toward something like a conscience, discovering that getting everything he wished for is more complicated than he imagined. The thrill of carnage is always shadowed by a tender, aching need to matter to someone, which keeps him achingly human.
