Character Arc
Ethan Burke is a US Secret Service agent who travels to Wayward Pines, Idaho to locate two missing federal agents, one of whom is a former colleague he was close to. A car crash leaves him injured and disoriented, and he wakes in the town hospital stripped of his belongings and his connection to the outside world. Determined and stubborn, Ethan refuses to accept the soothing explanations offered by the locals and immediately sets about trying to find a way home.
As his investigation deepens, Ethan clashes with the town's authorities, tests the limits of its electrified perimeter and slowly recruits a handful of residents willing to question the rules. His search for the truth puts his life and his family in danger, and he is forced to weigh his instincts as an investigator against the safety of the people he loves. Over the course of the first season he transforms from an outsider hunting for answers into a reluctant leader for the people of Wayward Pines.
Ethan's arc is driven by the tension between duty and family, and by his refusal to look away from uncomfortable truths. His relationships with his wife Theresa and his former partner Kate complicate his choices, and the secret he eventually uncovers reframes everything he thought he knew about the town. Matt Dillon anchors the first season with a grounded, weary intensity that earned the show much of its early acclaim.
