Character Arc
Zhao Yuanzhou is the central figure of Fangs of Fortune and the engine of its core mystery. Outwardly he presents as a charismatic, world-weary man who steps forward to help the imperial court contain the supernatural chaos following the goddess Bai Ze's death. In truth he is Zhu Yan, an ancient and powerful demon leader who, rather than fight a losing war between the realms, chooses to surrender and propose the creation of a demon-hunting bureau. That concealed identity sets the dramatic tension for nearly every relationship he forms.
Across the series, Zhao Yuanzhou operates as both architect and reluctant guardian of the bureau. His vast experience makes him a formidable strategist in the supernatural cases the team investigates, but his demon nature keeps him at arm's length from the very people he comes to rely on, especially Wen Xiao, who suspects what he is hiding. The drama uses his dual existence to explore questions of trust, redemption, and whether a being defined by an ancient role can choose a different path.
As the episodic cases gradually link to the larger calamity threatening both realms, Zhao Yuanzhou is forced to confront his own history and the weight of leadership he once carried as Zhu Yan. His arc balances guarded restraint with moments of genuine connection, and his choices increasingly determine whether the fate-bound group can avert catastrophe. The portrayal anchors the show's blend of mystery, mythology, and slow-burning camaraderie.
