Character Arc
Florence Johnston is the Jeffersons' wisecracking maid, hired once the family achieves the kind of wealth that comes with live-in help. From her first appearance, Florence refuses to be intimidated by George, trading barbs with him and puncturing his self-importance with sharp, deadpan one-liners. Her famous early quip about whether the family is going to help her with the dishes immediately established the dynamic that would make her a fan favorite.
Although Florence works for the Jeffersons, she is treated more like a member of the family than an employee, particularly by Louise, with whom she shares genuine warmth. Her ongoing feud with George is affectionate at its core, and the series gives Florence her own storylines, including her personal struggles and aspirations. The character proved so popular that she briefly anchored a short-lived spin-off.
Across the run of the show, Florence remains a comedic standout, her cynicism and quick wit providing a reliable foil to George's bluster. Marla Gibbs received multiple Emmy nominations for the role, and Florence is widely regarded as one of the most memorable sitcom characters of the era. Her presence helped balance the household and gave the series some of its most quoted exchanges.
