Character Arc
George Jefferson is the central character of the series, a self-made businessman who built a chain of dry-cleaning stores from a single shop into a profitable enterprise. His success funds the family's move from Queens to a high-rise apartment on Manhattan's Upper East Side, and his pride in that achievement is a recurring source of both comedy and conflict. Brash, loud, and quick-tempered, George is fiercely competitive and rarely misses a chance to boast about his accomplishments.
Much of George's humor comes from his stubbornness, his prejudices, and his clashes with those around him, including his maid Florence, his neighbors the Willises, and his wife Louise, who reins in his worst impulses. Despite his abrasive exterior, the series repeatedly reveals George's loyalty to his family and his genuine, if rarely spoken, affection for Louise. His character originated on All in the Family as Archie Bunker's neighbor, where his stubborn pride mirrored Archie's own.
Across eleven seasons, George remains largely unchanged in temperament, which is part of the show's comedic engine, but viewers see softer moments that humanize him: his devotion to his son Lionel, his evolving relationship with the interracial Willis family, and occasional displays of vulnerability. Sherman Hemsley's energetic, physical performance, including George's distinctive strut, made the character one of the most recognizable figures in American sitcom history.
