Character Arc
Gary Ewing is the troubled middle son of the Ewing oil dynasty and the character who bridges Knots Landing with its parent series, Dallas. Long overshadowed by his domineering brother J.R. and his favored younger brother Bobby, Gary arrives in California hoping to build a quieter, more stable life with his wife Valene, away from the pressures of the family business in Texas.
Gary's central struggle is his recurring battle with alcoholism, which strains his marriage to Valene and tests his relationships with neighbors and family alike. His arc includes periods of sobriety and relapse, a tumultuous on-and-off relationship with Valene that produces their daughter, and an entanglement with the scheming Abby Cunningham that draws him deeper into business and personal turmoil.
Despite inheriting significant Ewing wealth, Gary repeatedly finds that money cannot resolve his inner conflicts. Across the series he is portrayed as fundamentally decent but vulnerable, swept up in the ambitions of those around him while striving to be a good husband and father. His enduring bond with Valene remains one of the show's defining and most revisited relationships.
