Character Arc

Hanako is the boy-ghost who haunts the third stall of the old girls' bathroom on the third floor of Kamome Academy, and he is counted as the seventh and most powerful of the school's Seven Mysteries. Cheerful, playful, and often a prankster, he presents himself as a wish-granting spirit, though his help frequently comes with a mischievous twist. Beneath the lighthearted exterior, however, lies a melancholy history connected to his life as a human and the circumstances of his death.

After Nene Yashiro summons him and becomes bound to him, Hanako takes her on as his assistant, and the two develop a warm, teasing relationship as they maintain order among the supernatural denizens of the school. He wields a knife and possesses considerable spiritual power, using it to keep rogue apparitions in check and to protect Nene from the dangers of the supernatural world.

Over the course of the series, hints about Hanako's true name and his tragic past gradually surface, including his ties to a brother and the events that bound him to the school. These revelations complicate his cheerful facade and deepen the central mystery, revealing a character caught between duty, regret, and his growing bond with Nene.
