Character Arc
Hikaru Indou is, to all appearances, Yoshiki's bright and cheerful best friend, returned home after a frightening episode in the mountains. But beneath the familiar smile is something else entirely, an uncanny presence that has taken on Hikaru's shape, memories, and mannerisms. The series treats this duality with eerie tenderness: the new Hikaru genuinely seems to care for Yoshiki, even as he is unmistakably not the boy who once existed.
Hikaru's arc is one of learning what it means to be human while wearing a borrowed life. He is curious, affectionate, and at times unsettlingly innocent about the danger he can pose, which gives the character a poignant strangeness. His devotion to Yoshiki anchors the story, and the question of whether that devotion is real, mimicked, or something new entirely lingers across the season.
As the village stirs and outsiders begin asking questions, Hikaru must navigate a world that may not tolerate what he is. The pressure of staying hidden, paired with his bond to Yoshiki, pushes the character toward moments of quiet menace and unexpected gentleness in equal measure, embodying the show's central blend of dread and tenderness.
