Character Arc
Hiroshi Kido is a good-natured local high school student who becomes one of Handa's more level-headed island acquaintances. Easygoing and a little laid-back, he often serves as a calmer presence among the more rambunctious children and teenagers, and he takes Handa's eccentricities in stride. His relaxed attitude reflects the unhurried pace of island life that the city-raised calligrapher finds so disorienting.
Though content with his quiet rural existence, Hiroshi quietly admires Handa's talent and dedication, and the calligrapher's presence nudges him to think a little more about his own future. He helps Handa navigate island customs and the local social web, acting as a bridge between the newcomer and the close community. Their interactions are gentle and frequently funny, built on mutual bemusement rather than conflict.
Over the series Hiroshi grows from a passive bystander into someone a bit more motivated and self-aware, partly thanks to watching Handa wrestle with his own art and identity. He embodies the ordinary islanders whose warmth gradually reshapes the protagonist, and his steady friendship is part of what makes Handa's stay feel less like exile and more like home.
