Character Arc
Naru Kotoishi is a fearless and endlessly energetic young island girl, around seven years old, who effectively appoints herself Handa's closest companion. Treating his rented house as her own playground, she barges in without warning, drags him into adventures, and refuses to be intimidated by his grumbling. Her boundless curiosity and complete lack of self-consciousness make her the engine that pulls the reluctant calligrapher out of his shell.
Raised largely by her grandfather in a tight-knit community, Naru embodies the freedom and joy of island childhood. She speaks in the thick local dialect, knows every hiding spot and shortcut, and gathers the other children around her with natural charisma. Her antics are a constant source of comedy, but there is real heart underneath, and her unguarded affection gives Handa a sense of belonging he did not know he needed.
Across the series Naru functions as both comic chaos and emotional anchor. Her presence teaches Handa to live in the moment and to value connection over status, and their unlikely friendship becomes the emotional centre of the show. Wholehearted, mischievous, and impossible not to love, she represents the spirit of the island and the simple happiness Handa slowly learns to embrace.
