Character Arc
Ichabod Crane is a soldier and scholar who served under General George Washington during the American Revolution before falling in battle against a Hessian horseman. He awakens in present-day Sleepy Hollow more than two hundred years later, bewildered by a world he no longer recognizes. His learned, formal manner and old-fashioned outlook provide much of the show's humor as he struggles to adapt to modern life.
Once he accepts his new reality, Ichabod learns that he is one of two Witnesses prophesied to stand against the forces of the apocalypse. He forms a deep partnership with Lieutenant Abbie Mills, drawing on his knowledge of hidden history and the founding era to fight the supernatural threats that surface. His personal history, including his marriage to the witch Katrina, becomes tangled in the larger war.
Over four seasons Ichabod faces betrayals, losses, and revelations about his own past, including the truth about his family and his enemies. He grows from a man out of time into a committed protector of the present world, carrying the weight of the Witness prophecy. By the end of the series, his sense of duty and his bonds with his allies define who he has become.
