Character Arc
Jang Tae-sang is the owner of the House of Golden Treasure, the most prominent pawnshop in 1945 Gyeongseong. Quick-witted, charming, and exceptionally well-informed, he has built a comfortable life by trading favors and information and by never picking a side he cannot survive. He presents himself as a pragmatist whose only true loyalty is to his own neck and to the staff who depend on him.
His careful balance collapses when he is pressured into locating a missing person, a task that draws him toward a guarded hospital and the secret it conceals. Working alongside the tracker Yoon Chae-ok, he is forced to confront how much his neutrality has cost others, and he begins to act on conscience rather than convenience. The bond between them sharpens his sense of purpose and gives the story its emotional anchor.
Over the course of the series, Tae-sang moves from a man who manages risk to one who accepts it, choosing to protect the vulnerable even when it endangers everything he has built. His charm never fully disappears, but it comes to sit alongside a deeper resolve, and his choices ripple outward in ways that the story revisits across its later chapter.
