Character Arc
Jin Young-soon is the warm but iron-willed heart of the series, a widowed mother who runs a pig farm in a close-knit rural village. Haunted by loss and determined that her son will never struggle the way she has, she raises Choi Kang-ho with relentless discipline, certain that pushing him hard is the truest form of love. Her toughness earns her a fearsome reputation, yet it masks a deep, aching tenderness for the boy she is trying to protect.
When the adult Kang-ho returns home changed and dependent after an accident leaves him with the mind of a child, Young-soon is forced to confront the cost of the way she raised him. Caring for him a second time, she gradually trades her hardened approach for patience, play, and open affection, mourning the years of closeness she feels she missed. The role lets her swing between broad village comedy and raw, tearful drama.
Across the season Young-soon's arc becomes a meditation on regret and second chances. As she nurses her son back toward himself, she also reckons with old grievances tied to the family's past, ultimately seeking a kind of peace and forgiveness both for others and for herself. Her devotion to Kang-ho and to the community that helped raise him drives the story's most emotional turns.
