Character Arc
John Constantine is a chain-smoking British occult detective, con man, and exorcist who reluctantly stands between humanity and the forces of darkness. Cynical, sarcastic, and morally gray, he is a master of dark magic and arcane knowledge who often bends or breaks the rules to win. He is deeply scarred by his past, especially his failure to save a young girl named Astra from a demon, an event that left him briefly committed to a psychiatric hospital.
Over the course of the season, Constantine investigates a string of supernatural threats while uncovering a larger pattern known as the Rising Darkness. He forms an uneasy partnership with the psychic Zed Martin and relies on his old friend Chas Chandler for muscle and support. Despite his self-serving exterior, Constantine repeatedly risks himself to protect innocents and undo the damage caused by demons and corrupted magicians.
Constantine's arc emphasizes his guilt, his loneliness, and the heavy personal cost of his magical lifestyle. He pushes people away to keep them safe, yet cannot fully escape his sense of responsibility. By the end of the series, he remains a wandering exorcist committed to the fight, a portrayal so well received that Matt Ryan carried the character into the Arrowverse.
