About Constantine
Constantine is an American supernatural-horror drama that aired on NBC during the 2014 to 2015 television season. Based on the DC and Vertigo comic book Hellblazer, the series follows John Constantine, a hard-living British occult detective, demonologist, and exorcist who reluctantly uses his knowledge of the dark arts to protect humanity from demonic and otherworldly threats. Haunted by his past failures, particularly the damnation of a young girl named Astra, Constantine wanders the world hunting the rising forces of evil.
The series leans heavily into stand-alone monster cases while building a larger mythology about a growing darkness threatening the world. Constantine teams with a small circle of allies, including the psychic artist Zed Martin and his loyal friend and protector Chas Chandler, as he confronts demons, vengeful spirits, fallen angels, and rogue magicians. The tone is darker and more horror-driven than many network dramas of the era, embracing the supernatural noir feel of its source material.
Although it earned a devoted cult following and praise for Matt Ryan's faithful portrayal of the title character, Constantine struggled in the ratings and was canceled after a single 13-episode season. Its legacy endured well beyond cancellation, as Matt Ryan continued to play John Constantine across the Arrowverse, most notably as a regular on Legends of Tomorrow, keeping the character alive for fans who had championed the show.
