Character Arc
John Mitchell is a vampire who has lived for roughly a century after being turned during the First World War. Charming, handsome, and easygoing on the surface, he works as a hospital porter alongside George and tries to stay off human blood, treating his thirst much like an addiction he must manage one day at a time. His friendship with George and Annie gives him a reason to hold on to his humanity.
Mitchell's past constantly threatens his present, as the vampire community keeps trying to draw him back into their ranks and into leadership. His struggle to resist blood becomes a central thread of the series, with relapses that carry devastating consequences for himself and the people he loves. His romance with Annie and his rivalry with the vampire leader Herrick drive much of the early drama.
Across his time on the show Mitchell is torn between the monster he fears he is and the man he wants to be, a tension that defines his tragic arc. His choices grow heavier as past sins catch up with him, culminating in a storyline that forces him and his friends to confront the cost of his nature. He remains one of the show's most beloved and conflicted figures.
