Character Arc

Kamina is the brash, boundlessly confident older-brother figure who refuses to accept a life buried underground. Convinced that a vast world exists above, he repeatedly tries to break through to the surface and inspires the timid Simon to believe in himself, embodying the series mantra of pushing past every limit through sheer force of will.

After reaching the surface, Kamina seizes the enemy mecha that becomes Gurren and combines it with Simon's Lagann to create Gurren Lagann. His charisma rallies survivors into the beginnings of Team Dai-Gurren, and his fearless leadership in battle becomes the emotional engine that drives Simon and the others forward.

Kamina is killed in battle relatively early in the story, but his impact echoes through the entire series. His unwavering belief in Simon and his famous speeches about believing in the version of yourself that believes in you become the philosophical core that Simon carries to the very end of the war against the Anti-Spiral.
