Character Arc

Kencho, full name Kenichiro Ryuzaki, is Akira's outgoing and charismatic best friend from their university film club. On the surface he seems to have it all together, working a respectable job in real estate while staying upbeat and sociable, the kind of friend who lights up any room he walks into.

When Akira reconnects with him during the apocalypse, however, the truth comes out: Kencho had been just as unhappy as Akira, smothered by expectations and a career that never fit who he really was. The collapse of normal life gives him permission to be honest about his dreams, including ambitions he had been too embarrassed to chase.

Across the season Kencho becomes Akira's loyal partner in adventure, matching his friend's enthusiasm for ticking off bucket list goals. His humour and warmth provide much of the show's comedy, but his arc also carries real heart as he learns to pursue the life he actually wants rather than the one others expected of him.
