Character Arc

King Alfred of Wessex — history's Alfred the Great — is The Last Kingdom's brilliant, maddening visionary: a pious, sickly, fiercely intelligent monarch who dreams of a single Christian England when no such country yet exists. Physically frail and tormented by illness and guilt, Alfred wages his wars as much with diplomacy, scholarship, and faith as with the sword, and his fraught partnership with the pagan Uhtred drives the series.

His arc is the agony of the long game. Alfred needs Uhtred's genius for battle but distrusts his godless soul; he manipulates, imprisons, and forgives the warrior in turn, always subordinating personal feeling to the grand design of the realm. The result is one of TV's great frenemy dynamics — two men who cannot stand each other and cannot succeed without each other.

David Dawson's controlled, quietly intense performance made Alfred a fan favorite and a worthy intellectual foil to Uhtred's brawn.
