Character Arc
KITT, the Knight Industries Two Thousand, is an artificially intelligent automobile built into a black 1982 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am. Equipped with a near-indestructible Molecular Bonded Shell, a self-aware computer brain, and a glowing red scanner, KITT serves as Michael Knight's partner and rolling command center. From Turbo Boost jumps to scanning suspects and overriding security systems, the car's gadgets drive much of the show's action.
What set KITT apart from any ordinary vehicle was personality. Voiced with crisp dignity by William Daniels, KITT is intelligent, fastidious, occasionally vain about its bodywork, and prone to dry, disapproving commentary on Michael's reckless driving and romantic entanglements. The push and pull between the careful computer and the impulsive driver gave the series much of its warmth and humor.
Throughout the run, KITT faces existential challenges that deepen the character, most memorably its confrontations with KARR, an earlier, malfunctioning prototype with a survival instinct and no conscience. These storylines frame KITT not merely as Michael's equipment but as a genuine character with loyalty, ethics, and something like feelings, cementing the talking car as the true icon of the franchise.
