Character Arc
Laverne DeFazio is the streetwise, sharp-tongued half of the title duo, a working-class woman from Milwaukee who caps bottles on the assembly line at the Shotz Brewery alongside her best friend and roommate Shirley. Tough, impulsive, and quick to take offense, Laverne contrasts sharply with Shirley's cheerful primness, and the friction between the two women drives much of the series' comedy. Laverne is recognizable for the cursive letter L she wears on nearly all of her clothing and for her fondness for milk mixed with Pepsi.
Beneath her brash exterior, Laverne is fiercely loyal and harbors the same hopes for romance and a better life that her friend does. Her relationship with her father, Frank DeFazio, who runs a local pizzeria and later a Burbank diner, gives the character emotional grounding throughout the show. As the series progressed and the setting moved from Milwaukee to California, Laverne continued to chase opportunities while remaining devoted to her friendship with Shirley.
Played by Penny Marshall, Laverne became one of television's defining working-class heroines of the era. Marshall's deadpan delivery and physical comedy made the character a fan favorite, and Laverne remained central to the show even after Cindy Williams departed during the final season. The role established Marshall as a comic star before she transitioned to a celebrated career as a film director.
