Character Arc
Alvin Murphy is the reluctant key to humanity's survival, the only known person to be bitten by a zombie and live. A former convict who was unwittingly injected with an experimental vaccine just before the outbreak, Murphy emerges immune, which makes his blood the most valuable resource on the planet. Sardonic, self-interested and endlessly reluctant, he spends much of the series being dragged toward a California lab he has no real desire to reach, providing a steady stream of dry, comic friction with his protectors.
As the apocalypse wears on, Murphy's condition begins to change him in strange and unpredictable ways, granting him an eerie influence over the undead and slowly altering his appearance and outlook. His arc becomes one of the show's most ambitious threads, blurring the line between savior and threat as his powers grow. What starts as a simple escort mission becomes a far more complicated question of who Murphy is becoming and whether the cure he carries is a blessing or something far more dangerous.
Murphy evolves from comic-relief cargo into one of Z Nation's most pivotal and morally tangled characters. His shifting allegiances, growing abilities and complicated relationship with Warren and the group keep audiences guessing about his true intentions right up to the end. By the later seasons he stands at the center of the show's mythology, a flawed, funny, unpredictable figure whose fate is bound up with the future of the entire human race.
