Character Arc

Nyanko-sensei is the comedic and beloved heart of the series, a powerful, ancient yokai named Madara who is sealed inside the rotund body of a beckoning-cat figurine. In this lucky-cat form he is gluttonous, sarcastic and endlessly fond of mochi, fried tofu and sake, providing much of the show's humour with his deadpan complaints and schemes to eat and drink his fill.

He first attaches himself to Takashi out of self-interest, agreeing to act as bodyguard only because Takashi promises him the Book of Friends after his death. Beneath the greedy, grumbling exterior, however, lies a fearsome spirit who can revert to his true form, a massive white wolf-like beast, to protect the boy from dangerous yokai and exorcists alike.

Over time Nyanko-sensei's bond with Takashi evolves from a transaction into authentic loyalty and affection, though he would never admit it openly. He becomes a constant companion, a reluctant guardian and, in his own prickly way, family. His mix of slapstick comedy and quiet devotion makes him one of anime's most memorable spirit characters.

? Frequently Asked Questions

No. Nyanko-sensei is the nickname Takashi gives to Madara, a powerful and ancient yokai who has sealed himself inside the body of a maneki-neko, a beckoning lucky-cat figurine. In that small, round form he looks harmless and comical, but he can revert to his true shape, an enormous wolf-like spirit, when he needs to fight or protect Takashi.

Nyanko-sensei initially agrees to guard Takashi only because Takashi promised him the Book of Friends once Takashi dies, making the arrangement purely self-interested at first. As the series progresses, however, the spirit grows genuinely fond of the boy and protects him out of real loyalty and affection, even though he stubbornly hides those feelings behind his greedy, grumbling personality.
