Character Arc

Takashi Natsume is the gentle, soft-spoken protagonist, a high school student who has been able to see yokai since childhood. Orphaned young and passed between relatives who feared his odd behaviour, he learned to mask his ability and keep people at a distance, expecting rejection rather than warmth. When he comes to live with the gentle Fujiwara couple, he finally finds a stable home and begins, cautiously, to let others in.

Inheriting the Book of Friends from his grandmother Reiko sets Takashi on his central mission: rather than wield the register to command yokai as she did, he resolves to return each spirit its name and its freedom. Through these encounters he meets yokai who are cruel, lonely, mischievous or kind, and his deep empathy for them gradually reshapes how he sees both the spirit world and himself.

Across the seasons Takashi grows from a guarded, self-isolating boy into someone who acknowledges that he is loved and that he loves in return. His friendships with classmates who know nothing of yokai, with exorcists, and with the spirits themselves teach him that vulnerability is not weakness. His quiet kindness, often expressed through small gestures rather than grand action, is the emotional centre of the series.

? Frequently Asked Questions

Takashi Natsume is voiced in the original Japanese version by Hiroshi Kamiya, a celebrated seiyu also known for Yato in Noragami and Levi Ackerman in Attack on Titan. His understated, tender performance is widely praised for capturing Natsume's quiet melancholy and warmth, and he has voiced the character across every season of the anime.

Takashi returns the names because the Book of Friends, created by his grandmother Reiko, binds yokai to obey whoever holds it, effectively robbing them of their freedom. Sympathising with the spirits and uncomfortable with that power, he chooses to release each name one by one. The ritual frees the yokai and often gives both Takashi and the spirit a moment of understanding and peace.
