Character Arc
Taro Sakamoto is the heart of the series, a man who was once the undisputed strongest hitman in the world. In flashbacks he is shown as a lean, intimidating killer whose mere presence ended conflicts, but the present-day Sakamoto is a heavyset, gentle shopkeeper who rarely raises his voice. His transformation came from falling in love with Aoi, to whom he promised he would never kill again, a vow that defines almost every choice he makes.
Across the first season Sakamoto is forced back into combat as enemies from his past hunt him for an enormous bounty. The central tension of his arc is the constant balancing act between his lethal skills and his refusal to take a life, which pushes him to invent increasingly creative non-lethal solutions. He gradually assembles a found family of allies, mentoring the younger Shin and Lu while never abandoning his role as a husband and father.
What makes Sakamoto compelling is the contrast between his deadly competence and his sincere desire for an ordinary, peaceful existence. He is unflappable, kind and quietly funny, and his devotion to his family grounds the show's wilder action. Even surrounded by danger, his goal is never glory or revenge but simply to return home to his shop and the people he loves.
