Character Arc
Gang-cheol is an imugi, a serpent being from Korean folklore who has lived for hundreds of years while awaiting the chance to ascend into a dragon. Centuries of solitude have left him guarded and sardonic, more comfortable observing humanity than belonging to it. His long memory makes him a repository of secrets about the palace and the curse that surrounds it, even as he keeps his own purposes hidden.
Bound to Yeo-ri by an old promise, Gang-cheol is reluctantly drawn back into human affairs. His dynamic with her supplies much of the show's humor and warmth, as his weary detachment is repeatedly punctured by her insistence on caring for the dead and the vulnerable. Working alongside her, he confronts the choices that have defined his long existence and begins to question whether ascension is worth the isolation it has demanded.
As the season builds toward its climax, Gang-cheol must weigh his centuries-old goal against his attachment to Yeo-ri and the people caught in the curse. His arc is one of a near-immortal being rediscovering what it means to risk something he can lose, and the finale tests how much of his old self he is willing to give up.
