Character Arc
Violet Evergarden begins the series as a young woman shaped entirely by war. Raised as a soldier and treated as a weapon, she follows orders without question and shows little outward emotion. After the conflict ends she is left physically and emotionally scarred, having lost both arms and fixated on the last words spoken to her by Major Gilbert Bougainvillea, words she does not yet understand.
Seeking to comprehend those words, Violet takes up work as an Auto Memory Doll, writing letters that capture other people's feelings. At first she struggles, translating requests too literally and failing to grasp the emotions beneath them. Through her assignments she encounters love, mourning, family, and longing, and each client teaches her something about the inner lives of others.
Over the course of the series Violet transforms from a detached instrument of war into a compassionate young woman who can feel and express emotion. She learns to grieve, to care, and to recognize the love that was shown to her. Her journey toward understanding the phrase that haunts her becomes a moving exploration of healing and what it means to be human.
