About Violet Evergarden

Violet Evergarden is set in a fictional world recovering from a long and devastating war. The story follows Violet, a young woman who was raised as a soldier and used as a weapon during the conflict. Trained only to fight and follow orders, she emerges from the war gravely injured, having lost both of her arms, which are replaced with metal prosthetics. With the fighting over, she must find a place for herself in a society at peace.

Taken in by Claudia Hodgins, a former military officer who now runs a postal company, Violet discovers the profession of an Auto Memory Doll, a worker who transcribes people's thoughts and feelings into written letters. Drawn to the work because she wants to understand the final words spoken to her by Major Gilbert Bougainvillea, the man who cared for her during the war, she begins traveling to write letters for clients from all walks of life.

Through each assignment, Violet meets people grappling with love, loss, regret, and hope, and slowly she learns to recognize the emotions she was never taught to feel. The series is celebrated for its lush hand drawn animation, its delicate emotional storytelling, and its meditation on grief, healing, and the meaning of human connection. As Violet helps others put their hearts into words, she gradually comes to understand her own.
