About Ajoche
Ajoche is a Nigerian period drama set in 1918 among the Idoma people of the country's middle belt, in the fictional kingdom of Ocholuje. Produced for Africa Magic and dubbed by some fans as a homegrown epic in the vein of large-scale fantasy sagas, the series uses a pre-colonial setting to explore questions of power, lineage and loyalty. Across its run it follows a royal household whose private grudges and public duties become difficult to separate as old secrets surface.
The story turns on the household of King Odaleko, whose throne, marriages and alliances are tested by ambition from within and threats from beyond Ocholuje's borders. Themes of war and honour sit alongside more intimate concerns of love, betrayal and the weight of tradition. As characters pursue revenge or protection for those they love, the kingdom's stability hangs in the balance and long-buried truths reshape who can be trusted.
Created and directed by James Omokwe, Ajoche aired on Africa Magic Showcase as a daily telenovela and later streamed on Showmax. It drew attention for its ambitious staging of an indigenous Nigerian setting and for an ensemble that mixed veteran performers with newer talent. The series was noted in the Nigerian press during its run and is often cited as part of a wave of Africa Magic original dramas built around local history and culture.
