About Al Fondo Hay Sitio
Al Fondo Hay Sitio, whose title translates roughly as There Is Room at the Back, is one of the most popular and enduring series in Peruvian television history, airing on America Television since 2009. The comedy-drama is built around a simple but evergreen premise: two families from opposite ends of the social ladder end up living side by side in an upscale Lima neighborhood, and their daily collisions, misunderstandings, and unexpected affections become a mirror for the whole country. On one side stand the wealthy and image-obsessed Maldini family, on the other the warm, scrappy, working-class Gonzales clan who arrive from the provinces and refuse to be looked down on.
Much of the show's heart comes from the Gonzales household, anchored by the strong-willed matriarch Rosario Charito Flores and her good-natured son Joel, whose romantic entanglements and comic schemes drive countless storylines. Around them orbit the long-suffering Maldini butler Peter McKay and a sprawling cast of neighbors, suitors, rivals, and relatives. The friction between old money and new arrivals fuels the humor, but the series keeps returning to the idea that pride, prejudice, and snobbery tend to dissolve once people actually share a fence line, a meal, or a crisis.
Across more than a decade and well over a thousand episodes, Al Fondo Hay Sitio became a national ritual, dominating prime-time ratings and turning its characters into household names. After its original run it returned for a hugely successful revival, reuniting beloved cast members and introducing a new generation of the same feuding families. Its blend of broad comedy, romance, and genuine commentary on class and community in Peru has made it a cultural touchstone and a benchmark for the country's home-grown storytelling.
