About Al Nadam
Al Nadam (The Regret) is a Syrian drama that premiered for the Ramadan season on 6 June 2016, written by Hasan Sami Yousef and directed by Laith Hajjo. The series follows the al-Ghoul family, a once-prosperous Damascus household, across two timelines: a comfortable period before 2011 and the harsher years that follow. Mahmoud Nasr plays Erwa al-Ghoul, a writer in middle age who sets down the story of his family and of the woman he loved, framing the action as a long act of remembrance.
The narrative structure became one of the show's most discussed features. Scenes set in the earlier, calmer period are presented in full color, while the later wartime scenes are rendered in black and white, a visual device that lets viewers track which moment in the family's history they are watching. Patriarch Ibrahim al-Ghoul, his son Abd al-Karim, and the wider circle of relatives and neighbors anchor a story about how comfort, ambition, and ordinary disagreements look different in hindsight.
Produced by Sama Al-Fan for International Production, Al Nadam paired veteran performers Salloum Haddad and Bassem Yakhour with a large supporting ensemble. The series drew strong attention during its Ramadan run for its restrained, character-driven approach to a difficult recent period, and it remains one of the more frequently cited Syrian dramas of its year. It can be streamed on Shahid.
