About Black Butler
Black Butler, known in Japan as Kuroshitsuji, is a dark-fantasy anime adapted from Yana Tobosos best-selling manga and animated by A-1 Pictures. Set in an alternate Victorian England, it follows Ciel Phantomhive, the twelve-year-old head of the noble Phantomhive family who serves as the Queens watchdog, secretly investigating the crimes and conspiracies that threaten the British Empire from the shadows. At his side stands Sebastian Michaelis, an impossibly elegant and lethally capable butler who is, in truth, a demon bound to Ciel by a Faustian contract.
The bargain is grim and binding. After his parents were murdered and the boy himself was tortured and offered up in a cult ritual, Ciel summoned a demon and traded his very soul in exchange for the power to take revenge on those who destroyed his house. Sebastian will obey his young master absolutely until that vengeance is complete, at which point he is entitled to devour Ciels soul. The contract is marked by a glowing seal on the boys eye and the back of the butlers hand, and Sebastians refrain, simply put, I am one hell of a butler, has become the series signature line.
Across its first run from 2008 to 2010 and the acclaimed 2014 arc Book of Circus, plus the films and the 2024 to 2025 Public School and Emerald Witch arcs, the show balances grisly mystery with deadpan comedy and gothic spectacle. Recurring threats include the flamboyant rogue Grim Reaper Grell Sutcliff, rival nobles, secret societies, and Ciels own crumbling humanity. Gorgeously designed and unafraid of its bleak premise, Black Butler became a cornerstone of modern gothic anime and a gateway title for fans of Victorian horror and morally grey heroes.
